Schoolboy action adventure a plenty as Maj. Smith (Burton) and Lt. Schaffer (Eastwood) lead a commando team to infiltrate an SS headquarters in the Bavarian Alps and rescue a captured General who holds the plans for D-Day.

But the General is a fake who knows nothing, a ploy for Maj. Smith’s real mission to uncover the Nazi spy network in Britain using a team containing German double agents. Tricky. Oh, and the SS headquarters is an old mountain top castle accessible only by cable car. Natch.

As usual the only criteria for the Nazis is to be obligingly thick, stumble ineptly over tripwires and be unable to shoot to save their lives. Which they can’t and so they don’t. While the good guys mow down the baddies like a strimmer in a hayfield. All good WWII stuff. And all achieved before CGI special effects, which just goes to show its not the size of the bang, its how you make it go bang.

A classic action adventure that never lets up until the last frame.
