The nearby Warwick arts centre recently hosted an exhibition of prints of Piranesi’s prisons and in my usual style I’d left it till the last few days to pay a visit, so it was quiet at least!
The prints are from etchings of imaginary fantastical architecture and while I’ve a book of prints, being able to see them full size (nearly to A0) really allowed a good look at the exacting detail in the etching. Wonderful :)
The curator had drawn links to the later Escher which I was chuffed about ‘cos that was my independent thought too. But then the curator showed why she was an arts graduate and I’m not by suggesting an interesting link with computer games and the levels and dizzying architecture that can be seen in some games such as World of Warcraft. Sadly these connections were, either for lack of space or money, not really explored deeply. I’d suggest an exhibition entitled “fantasy spaces” looking at the crossover from art to games to film (such as the dwarf city of Kazad-dûm in the Lord of the Rings films)
Alongside there was a modern art exhibition by Lindsay Seers. The less said the better, I’ll just start ranting.
