Leonardo

Clearly timed to coincide with the Leonardo exhibition at the National Gallery, this informative BBC documentary on iPlayer traces Leonardo da Vinci’s career as artist and engineer.

The dramatised scenes are used to good effect without turning the programme into a bawdy historical drama. The reference to history experts give an accuracy, CGI is used to reveal the Last Supper in its fresh glory and experimenters try to build some of the fantastical machines. What is striking is Leonardo’s desire to explore rather than finish things, always wanting to move to the next thing once an item had been sufficiently analysed. Not sure how he would have coped with Steve Job’s comment that “real artists ship”. Perhaps the hyper-imaginative types need a guide to focus them to deliver.
