Origins of Us

Dr. Alice Roberts presents Origins of Us showing how the 6 million year journey of human evolution is written in our bones, guts and brains. What I liked is the way some potentially very complex ideas are described simply and by reference to understandable visual evidence. Of course to the experts it’s probably far more subtle, but to lay-person it makes sense with a clear narrative presented. There are some ‘wow’ moments when for instance, we are told the human hand has a quarter of the bones in our bodies and shown that we have (not just opposable but) bigger, stronger thumbs than chimps. I could do with less of the swelling, cinematic mood music but Dr. Roberts presents with a great sense of glee and delight at explaining ancient fossils and their implications. You end understanding our evolution as amazing and astonishing.
