Wonder Woman

After years of speculation, a Wonder Woman finally hits the big screen. But with her compatriot heroes of DC comic recently offering rather underwhelming performances, can she beat the odds and finally deliver a DC movie of worth?

Crossing no-mans land
But no man can cross no-mans land!
I'm not a man...

Yes, absolutely yes - and there is something poetic about the practically abandoned character of Wonder Woman turning up and showing Superman and Batman how its done. Superhero movies of late seem to have become much like a 7 year old playing with action figures. Incoherent plot; lots of fighting and explosions. This film has plenty of action but this is predominantly a character movie.

Diana, princess warrior of the Amazons heads off to war full of naivety and idealism. The reality of war sees her painfully discovering that humans are not ‘perfect’, and war is brutal and messy. It’s that evolution that drives the film and it’s all the better for it. It shouldn’t matter but perhaps having a female director (Patty Jenkins) was instrumental in that.

Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman fits the role perfectly, moving between the lighter moments and the kick-ass stuff comfortably. Long may she have the role.

Anyways, what next for WW? Given the success of the film I’d be surprised if they didn’t fast-track another movie although that may prove tricky given the current release schedule of films (Justice League, Flash, Aquaman etc). But after the rather “meh” films from DC of late they’ve finally found a winner to stand with the Marvel films.

“Awww, a baby!”
