Garden walls

The back garden wall had been significantly leaning into my side for a long time, and figured if it’s been that way for decades it’s probably best left alone.

I’m not entirely sure who technically owns the wall, I’d have to check with the land registry. But since the external face points away from my garden it’s likely mine.

But eventually, as do all empires, it fell. Neighboring landlord had previously put up a tall fence on thier side so there is no loss of boundry but it makes for a significant amount of cleanup work. Bizarrely the worst part of the lean survived, but it made sense to just topple that over as well leaving a broken ending which will need a new supporting pillar and a 3-brick high remaining wall which will need capping.

So first job is to clear up all the bricks and reclaim as many as possible. While sitting and chiseling away the mortar on the bricks was longwinded and repetitive it was rather zen. Pick up a brick, chip away and add it to a stack. Repeat. The garden looks like a builders yard, and there was a fair pile of rubble of debris and broken bricks.

Next is to rebuild a pillar to support the broken end. The existing pillar remains seemed to have a solid enough foundation so dig a trench to set some new foundations for a raised bed. Smashed up the assorted debris to make a more even sized mixture and used that as hardcore.
