As overviewer has become unmaintained it hasn’t been able to create the maps for the latest minecraft version 1.20. Which is a pity because overviewer was simple and worked. Hence a switch to another mapping program was now required.
Bluemap seemed widely regarded so clone the code from github, compile and follow the installation instructions. Once configured, issue the instruction to create the map and wait.
6 hours later after an overnight run the map had been prepared for viewing. It’s was always going to take a while since it is starting from scratch, however this initial build wasn’t any worse than overviewer’s time for the same process. Once done future updates are much quicker, a few minutes, even though the program alarmingly gives an initial ETA of hours. And the resulting maps are visible via a web browser and look lovely.
One nice feature (which was also possible in overviewer) is to add visible markers and annotations onto the map. Since my minecraft thing is civilizing the wilderness, adding names and places to the map works nicely.
