Zentangle drawing (sortof)

Could a more proscriptive art practice help to gain a more frequent ‘do some art’ habit?

I’m a bit intermittent with actually doing some artwork, sometimes it just seems too much to get started. So inspired by some postings by Kristin Henry I tried just placing repetitive shapes on some paper. I actually found it rather absorbing, quickly getting into a flow even though the output could hardly be called ‘artistic’.

That all lead onto a technique called Zentangle® which I quickly discovered involves money, certified trainers, lots of excluding terminology. So no thanks, but the general principle is easy enough to just do with your own flair and style. Which I do.

While I’m not aiming for amazing I am gratified with the results, and it gets pen to paper in a calming manner. Of course being me I can’t help thinking about things like composition, theme and focus. Which may not be quite in the spirit of ‘zen’ just drawing and letting things be what they will.
