Since I’m interested in the painting, not drawing still life I’ll trace onto the canvas from a photo.
There are a few ways to do this including buying transfer paper. I printed the photo (scaled to sit nicely on the canvas) and then used a charcoal pencil to rub the back of the print on the critical lines. Place the printout on the canvas and with a biro trace the drawing. We want to capture the major structures and boundries of shadows. Finish off with pencil on the canvas to get a workable outline. You can see I’ve done some shading with pencil to highlight the tones. I actually rubbed this version off and redrew it after I realised it was positioned too low on the canvas. >sigh<
